The Gentle Art of Blessing

by Regina B. Jensen

Did you ever wonder WHERE the habit of blessing people came from and what it is supposed to do, other than what a parent said to their child leaving the home?

Well, when I was still pretty handicapped after that catastrophic stroke and really shouldn’t have been driving in the dark for many hours to get my rescue piggies, I kept myself concentrating on the road by practicing blessing the oncoming traffic: “Bless all the people going to work and having a wonderful work-day today…. Bless all those who come in contact with them”…I would say, and go on “…and let others be blessed by a simple, unconscious contact with them…. Bless all the people who stop by at coffee-shops and spreading their light to so many others”…and on and on I would drive bright and alert as can be.

Well, I taught it to one of my clients and now, she is much better at it than I. There is an art to it, it seems. For sure, one doesn’t NOT want to be manipulative with it. NOOOT: “Bless all the people who scream and yell at others…”, but rather: “Bless all frustrated people and have them find healthy avenues to express their frustrations…. Bless them finding solace and comfort in unexpected places….bless the fact that easy solutions may suddenly occur to them in unexpected ways.”

Well, I never thought, until I really got into this, how well it REALLY worked. Thinking of others we don’t even know in a blessing way opens our heart without any effort and…lo and behold...includes US ourselves automatically in the blessing-activity. Our heart has to open as a part of the process, and we don’t even have to try.

I remember telling one of my groups that they should experiment quietly blessing a homeless person crossing the street and watch what happen. I have seen it many times. They suddenly look up with a searching eye and look into your direction. It is great fun, and, in the process, gives as “research-feedback” whether long-distance healing activities or the likes works!

Try it! You might like it. And you don’t even have to touch your son’s head while he is kneeling and say: “Bless you, my child,’ although THAT, we hear, makes people actually feel very cared for and good…old-fashioned or not. A warm heart is a warm heart on any day!
